Spike is an Australian Bearded Dragon who joined our family from the Peninsula Humane Society. Sorie had expressed interest in turtles, but I had discovered they required a lot of maintenance. A friend had suggested that a lizard would be easier. I obtained a fish tank from our freecycle email group (where you can pick up many free items that others have no further use for). I took an intense web-driven crash course in Bearded Dragons and their care and so it was that Spike joined the Syme family.
He hibernates for quite some time of the year, eats leaves, some flowers, lettuce, dried worms and crickets, and he is quite mellow all the while. I do enjoy watching him as he perches on some logs or rocks in his terrarium. He has a very wise face and recognizes my voice and the sound of his food jar. He will drink water from a dropper if I hold it out and his tongue is quite amazing as he pokes it out to catch the drops of water.
He requires warm lighting during the day and less at night as he needs an external heat source to keep his body regulated. I have learned quite a bit about lizards over these last couple of years and have gone from thinking I would never own a reptile to quite enjoying Spike's company.
